Create leadership through training
I have just come back from attending an AICD Leaders Edge Luncheon. A very well
run and worthwhile event by the way. Peter Richie was the keynote speaker.
Peter spent 32 years as the CEO and chairman of MacDonalds Australia, and grew
the company to more than 500 stores and 50,000 employees.
What I took away from his speech was just how important it is to keep training our young people. Continuous training creates the environment for employees to excel, but most importantly a structure that breeds creativity and ideas.
Leadership can be innate but it can also be taught. Give managers a challenge, allow them to rise to it, coach them along the way, and be rewarded with loyal employees. Seek out those leadership qualities and nurture them.
With the leadership provided by Peter, MacDonalds Australia led the way globally. We need more of this type of home grown leadership acrosss other corpoarte businesses in Australia. Let's stop employing people from overseas to head them up.
